After Argentina’s Copa America triumph, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez found himself at the centre of controversy when a video surfaced showing him singing a chant deemed offensive and racist. The incident drew criticism, including from some of his Chelsea teammates, such as Wesley Fofana.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Fernandez issued an apology to his Chelsea colleagues, admitting his mistake and emphasising the need for better education on the issue.
Despite an investigation launched by FIFA, no disciplinary action has been taken against Fernandez or his Argentina teammates.
The Football Association (FA) clarified it has no jurisdiction over the incident, as it occurred during international duty. Meanwhile, CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American football, has yet to confirm the outcome of its investigation.
For now, Fernandez appears to have avoided further repercussions but remains under scrutiny as calls for accountability in football grow louder.
