Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has tempered expectations about the broader implications of his team’s upcoming Premier League clash against Everton, set for December 22.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s 17th league fixture of the season, Maresca acknowledged the challenges posed by Everton, particularly at Goodison Park, where the Blues have historically struggled.
“I didn’t know that,” Maresca admitted when asked about Chelsea’s poor away record against the Toffees. “I hope we can win. Of course, it will be a tough game, but we will try to prepare as best as possible. The goal is always the same: prepare for the game and win it. Everton’s stadium (Goodison Park) is tough, not just for Chelsea but for any club.”
Despite Chelsea’s recent improvement in form, the manager downplayed the notion that a win against Everton could add pressure on Liverpool, who currently sit higher on the table with two games in hand.
“I don’t know if they will feel pressured if we win,” Maresca said. “That’s more of a question for them. We will try to prepare for the game to win it. If we win, they will still have two games in hand. So, I don’t think it will be pressure for them, but that’s more of a question for them, I don’t know.”
The Italian coach’s measured response highlights Chelsea’s focus on their immediate goals rather than external factors, as they aim to secure a vital three points against an unpredictable Everton side.
