Eduoard Mendy, who left Chelsea in the summer of 2023 to join Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, has spoken positively about his departure and his interactions with club co-owner Todd Boehly.
In a recent interview, the Senegalese goalkeeper revealed that despite not agreeing on a new contract, his exit from Stamford Bridge was amicable.
“The first time I saw Todd was during the FA Cup, because they were already in the process to buy the club,” Mendy shared. “I had a chat with him, and Todd was really nice. It was his first stint in football, but you could feel the motivation to do great for this club.”
Reflecting on his departure, Mendy explained the mutual respect between himself and Chelsea during the decision-making process. “Chelsea came to me and said, ‘Okay, we have not agreed about the new contract, but we want to keep you. But we will respect what you want to do,’ and I said I want to leave because I’m in my time.”
He continued, “This is football, things change so quick. Before that, I was thinking of doing four or five years at Chelsea, but I needed to sit and think about my future and the future of my family. I made the decision to leave the club, and Chelsea respected that, which was class from them.”
