Marc Cucurella is set to serve a one-match suspension following his red card after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The left-back was initially booked in stoppage time for a late challenge on Fabio Carvalho, but tensions escalated after the final whistle as both sets of players clashed on the pitch. Cucurella and Brentford’s Kevin Schade appeared to be at the centre of the scuffle, leading to both players receiving yellow cards.
As it was Cucurella’s second yellow of the match, the Chelsea defender was shown a red card. The Premier League Match Centre explained the decision on X:
“The referee issued a second yellow card to Cucurella for adopting an aggressive attitude. Schade was also booked for the same offence.”
Because Cucurella received two yellow cards rather than a straight red, he will only serve a one-match ban. This means the Spaniard will miss Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
This marks Cucurella’s second suspension of the season, with the first coming after he picked up five yellow cards in Chelsea’s opening seven league matches, forcing him to sit out the Blues’ defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in October.
The 25-year-old has also been booked against Arsenal, taking his tally to six yellow cards for the campaign. Should he accumulate ten bookings before matchweek 32, Cucurella will face an automatic two-match suspension.
With Cucurella sidelined for the Everton clash, Enzo Maresca will need to find a solution at left-back as Chelsea aim to maintain their strong Premier League form.
