Raheem Sterling has reportedly made a decision regarding his future as the January transfer window approaches, despite enduring a difficult loan spell at Arsenal.
Since joining the Gunners on loan from Chelsea in August, Sterling has struggled to make an impact. The 30-year-old England international, who has 82 caps for his country, has only played 10 games under Mikel Arteta, managing just one goal and two assists.
To make matters worse, Sterling has not featured in Arsenal’s last three matches in both the Premier League and Champions League, failing to even come off the bench.
Despite his limited game time, The London Standard reports that Sterling has decided to stay at Arsenal for the remainder of his loan. The winger has no plans to cut his temporary move short in January, even though it would give him the chance to secure more regular football elsewhere.
Instead, Sterling is determined to fight for his place in Arteta’s side during the second half of the season. It’s understood that he has become a popular figure in Arsenal’s dressing room, and his attitude and professionalism have earned him respect within the squad.
Speaking about Sterling’s situation last week, Arteta expressed sympathy for the player, explaining that injuries and suspensions have affected the winger’s opportunities.
“He’s very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play,” Arteta said. “When he hasn’t started the games, 90 per cent of the subs that I make is related to saving minutes or because of injuries or avoiding injuries. It’s not tactical reasons.”
Sterling’s loan at Arsenal is set to expire at the end of the season, at which point he will return to Chelsea. The forward remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2027, having signed a five-year deal when he joined from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022.
It remains to be seen whether Sterling can reignite his career in North London or if his future lies back with Chelsea. For now, his focus is on earning a spot in Arsenal’s starting XI.
