Enzo Maresca’s decision to make Robert Sanchez Chelsea’s number-one goalkeeper this season continues to spark debate within the football world.

Despite widespread criticism of the 27-year-old Spanish shot-stopper’s performances, Maresca remains steadfast in his choice.

Sanchez, signed from Brighton, has faced scrutiny for being error-prone and limited with the ball at his feet, with many labelling him a liability for the Blues.

The decision to prioritise Sanchez over summer signing Filip Jorgensen, a talented 22-year-old from Villarreal, has left fans and pundits questioning the Chelsea manager’s judgment.

Jamie Carragher has been among the outspoken critics, suggesting that Sanchez’s inclusion could cost Chelsea dearly this season.

However, Maresca remains unwavering in his faith in the Spaniard, starting him in all but one Premier League match so far.

Addressing the media on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Brentford, Maresca made his position clear:

“The idea is not to change, we trust Robert,” the Italian coach said via Fabrizio Romano. “But also in that case, we have two keepers who are both good. Until they maintain the same level, we are happy with that.”

For now, it appears Sanchez’s position is secure, as Maresca doubles down on his commitment to the under-fire goalkeeper. Whether this gamble pays off for Chelsea in the long run remains to be seen.
