Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has voiced his belief that Chelsea are strong contenders in this season’s Premier League title race, countering recent claims by Enzo Maresca.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Van Dijk dismissed the notion that Chelsea are flying under the radar.
“I don’t think they are under the radar,” the Dutch defender said.
“Obviously with the squad they have and the players they have. The players that can come off the bench.”
Van Dijk acknowledged that while Chelsea’s youthful squad may lack some experience, their sheer quality and depth make them a formidable side. “Obviously we can talk about inexperience maybe, but they have the quality, they have the players to make it difficult for any team, and that is what they have been doing,” he explained.
The Liverpool captain went further to emphasise Chelsea’s title credentials, adding, “They are definitely up there. I think they have shown it.”
Chelsea’s performances under Enzo Maresca have drawn widespread attention this season, with their blend of emerging talents and experienced stars keeping them in the conversation for the league’s top honours.
Van Dijk’s comments underline the growing recognition of Chelsea’s potential to challenge at the summit of English football.
For Enzo Maresca, he’s keeping expectations low and his players focused by saying they aren’t in the title race.
