Robert Sanchez is not Chelsea’s best goalkeeper – Julien Laurens reveals

Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy has come under scrutiny following comments from football analyst Julien Laurens, who suggested that Filip Jørgensen may be a superior option to current first-choice keeper Robert Sánchez.

Speaking to ESPN, Laurens expressed his confusion over Jørgensen’s limited playing time, stating, “I think Jørgensen is way better than Sánchez. I don’t understand why Jørgensen is not playing. I really don’t understand that.”

Jørgensen, a 22-year-old Danish goalkeeper, joined Chelsea from Villarreal in July 2024 on a seven-year contract. Despite his promising credentials, including 37 appearances for Villarreal in the previous season, he has found first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge limited. His standout performance came during a Europa Conference League match against Heidenheim, where he made 11 crucial saves, contributing significantly to Chelsea’s 2-0 victory.

In contrast, Robert Sánchez, who arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023, has been Enzo Maresca’s preferred choice between the posts. However, Sánchez’s tenure has been marred by inconsistent performances and occasional errors, leading to questions about his reliability as the team’s primary goalkeeper.

Manager Enzo Maresca has so far maintained his trust in Sánchez, confirming that he would start in key fixtures, such as the recent match against Tottenham. Nonetheless, Jørgensen’s impressive displays in cup competitions have intensified the debate over who should be Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper.

The situation presents a challenging decision for Maresca: continue with the experienced yet inconsistent Sánchez, or promote the younger, in-form Jørgensen to a starting role. As Chelsea aims for success across multiple competitions, the choice of goalkeeper could prove pivotal in the club’s pursuit of silverware.

I have just seen a very stupid goalkeeper in the name of Filip Jörgensen today against Ipswich. Please if you are not a coach do not influence the person who has a professional in that area. What a very stupid keeper I have watched today.
