Marc Cucurella endured a difficult start to Chelsea’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Tottenham, but the Spanish international was quick to acknowledge his errors and send a message to the fans after the match.
Chelsea fell 2-0 behind within the first 11 minutes due to goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski, with Cucurella’s mishaps playing a significant role in Tottenham’s early dominance. Slipping twice and gifting possession to Spurs, the left-back drew criticism from fans and pundits alike. Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back, describing the situation as embarrassing:
“Cucurella’s coming to the bench, don’t blame anyone else – it’s your own fault son! Absolute schoolboy stuff. Embarrassing. He slips again. Look at him shrugging his shoulders. Did he not do a warm-up?”
Cucurella rushed to the touchline to change his boots after Kulusevski’s goal, but Chelsea’s resilience turned the game around, thanks to a brace from Cole Palmer and goals from Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez.
After the match, Cucurella made light of his rocky start, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “It almost slipped away…but proud of the amazing team effort to turn things around.”
The left-back also shared a post on Instagram, showing that the infamous boots had already been discarded. His caption, “Sorry blues,” showed his humility and accountability, though the post has since been deleted.
Despite his early errors, Cucurella’s willingness to own up and move forward reflects the team spirit driving Chelsea this season. With lessons learned, the defender will look to bounce back stronger in upcoming matches as the Blues continue to climb the Premier League table.
Keep the blue flag flying high, Cucurella!
