Enzo Maresca Insists Chelsea Aren’t Favourites to Beat Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has downplayed any suggestion that his side are favourites heading into today’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the Blues’ sensational form and Tottenham’s recent struggles, Maresca is adamant that this clash is far from a guaranteed victory for his team.

Some Spurs supporters, clearly feeling the weight of the occasion, have reportedly expressed reluctance to attend the match, fearing a heavy defeat. But Maresca dismissed the notion of any no-shows at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“First of all, the fans are going to be there, no doubt,” Maresca said. “And second, we are not favourite, absolutely not. They are playing European competition, like us, we are there. But not because we are second in the table, we are favourite, absolutely not.”

Chelsea Flying High, Spurs Feeling the Heat

Chelsea head into the derby in superb form under Maresca, sitting second in the Premier League and fresh from an impressive 5-1 midweek win against Southampton. Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs are in a tough spot, having failed to capitalize on their 4-0 triumph over Manchester City two weeks ago.

Last season, Tottenham briefly flirted with title contention under Postecoglou, but their fortunes have since turned. However, Maresca refused to draw parallels or use Spurs’ dip in form as a warning for his team.

“I don’t think we need Ange’s experience or Tottenham’s experience to understand things can change quick,” Maresca stated. “Every season in football, in England, in Spain, in Italy, every country, things can change quick.”

Respect for the Rivalry

Maresca’s comments reflect his respect for the rivalry and the unpredictable nature of the Premier League. While Chelsea are brimming with confidence, the manager’s caution is a reminder that Tottenham, especially at home, remain a formidable opponent.

For Chelsea fans, this derby represents another opportunity to showcase their resurgence under Maresca. But with their manager keeping the players grounded, the Blues know they will have to fight for every point.

Let’s hope Maresca’s humility sets the stage for another memorable Chelsea performance. Up the Blues!
