Chelsea fans are once again grappling with the future of their captain, Reece James, after fresh injury woes reignited debates about his long-term role at the club. The Blues have been urged to “cut their losses” on the England international, despite Manchester City’s Kyle Walker naming him as the best right-back in the world.

James, 24, has endured a frustrating career plagued by injuries, missing an astonishing 102 games since the start of the 2020-21 season. After playing four consecutive Premier League matches across October and November, the talented full-back suffered yet another hamstring setback during the international break, leaving his return date uncertain.

This recurring theme has prompted ex-Watford striker Troy Deeney to suggest that Chelsea might need to make the tough decision to part ways with James. Speaking to talkSPORT, Deeney said:

“I think if you get some money for him [James], you’ve done well. It’s similar with Luke Shaw. You’re not denying their ability and how good they are. But if they’re not fit to play, what are you paying them for? You may as well go and give that space to another young player and unfortunately cut your losses.

“You can’t keep saying, ‘Every time he’s fit, he’s great.’ You have to cut your losses. You can’t keep having the same injury. Something along the line is breaking down.

“It really is a shame, because I don’t think we’re ever going to see the true potential of what Reece James is.”

While Deeney has called for Chelsea to consider selling their academy product by 2025, others strongly disagree. Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker heaped glowing praise on James earlier this year, declaring him the best in world football when fully fit. Walker said:

“Reece James. He’s just got everything. Everything. If I could make the complete right-back, it would be him. He can defend, attack, he’s technical, can use both feet, he’s a threat at dead-ball situations, he’s quick.

“I think if I was to build the perfect right-back, I would go with my strength, [Achraf] Hakimi’s pace, [Joao] Cancelo’s technical ability, Trent’s [Alexander-Arnold] passing, [Dani] Carvajal’s mentality and I think Reece James’ football brain because he obviously played in midfield for a long time.

“But if I was to round all of them up, I’d say it would be Reece. He gives you a little bit of everything.”

As Chelsea fans await their captain’s return to action, the contrasting views from Deeney and Walker highlight the ongoing dilemma surrounding James. Undoubtedly one of the most gifted players of his generation, the question remains whether the club will continue to stand by him or heed calls to move in a different direction. For now, fans will be hoping that their captain can overcome his setbacks and reclaim his place as one of the world’s best.
