Heading into last weekend’s round of matches, Chelsea were second in the league and Arsenal were third, with Chelsea having scored more goals, as both sides were level on points.

At the weekend, Arsenal jumped to second place after beating West Ham 5-2. Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 3-0 the following day, but dropped to third place.

The two London sides have the same record for wins, draws and losses, as well as goals scored and conceded after the same number of games.

Arsenal are however ahead on technicality.

The Premier League rule states: “If any clubs finish with the same number of points, their position in the Premier League table is determined by goal difference, then the number of goals scored, then the team who collected the most points in the head-to-head matches, then who scored most away goals in the head-to-head.”

The first two options are tie-breakers — goal difference and number of goals scored.

Chelsea are behind Arsenal on current head to head. Their only game this season ended in a 1-1 draw. However, as it took place at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal have the advantage on head-to-head basis, after scoring at Stamford Bridge.
