Former Premier League striker Peter Crouch has called on Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to make a bold decision ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa by starting Filip Jorgensen in goal instead of Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea continued their dominant run in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, securing a hard-fought 2-0 win over Bundesliga outfit Heidenheim.
Christopher Nkunku and Mykhailo Mudryk provided the decisive goals, but it was Jorgensen’s performance between the sticks that caught Crouch’s attention.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Crouch praised Jorgensen for his assured display and suggested it’s time for the Danish goalkeeper to be given the opportunity to impress in the Premier League.
“Chelsea didn’t have their own way tonight; they had to rely on Jorgensen quite a few times,” Crouch said. “I think he deserves a shot, I have to say.”
Jorgensen, who arrived from Villarreal for £20.7 million in the summer, has so far made four appearances this season, all in the UEFA Conference League.
Meanwhile, Robert Sanchez remains the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League, but his performances have not been without criticism.
“There’s been a lot of talk around Sanchez, a few mistakes; he looks nervy at times,” Crouch continued. “Every time I’ve seen him [Jorgensen] play, he’s not put a foot wrong.”
With Aston Villa set to visit Stamford Bridge this weekend, the debate over who should start in goal is likely to intensify.
Sanchez, while solid at times, has had moments of uncertainty that have left fans questioning his reliability.
On the other hand, Jorgensen has quietly gone about his business, impressing in European competition.
Will Maresca stick with his current No. 1, or will he heed Crouch’s advice and give Jorgensen the Premier League stage he seemingly deserves? Stamford Bridge waits in anticipation.
