Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher has been encouraged to leave Anfield and seize the opportunity to join Chelsea, a move that could benefit both the player and the club.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper has stepped up admirably for Liverpool, starting the last eight games in place of the injured Alisson Becker.
Kelleher’s performances have earned him widespread praise, but with Alisson nearing a return, questions are mounting about Kelleher’s future.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot confirmed this week that Alisson would remain sidelined for their clash with Manchester City, but the Brazilian has been Liverpool’s undisputed No. 1 for over six years.
His imminent return will likely see Kelleher return to the bench—a position he has previously expressed frustration about.
For Kelleher, regular first-team football is becoming a priority, and Chelsea has emerged as a potential destination.
Robert Sanchez has been Enzo Maresca’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, but doubts remain about whether the former Brighton shot-stopper is up to the standard required at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to talkSPORT, ex-England striker Darren Bent highlighted why Kelleher and Chelsea could be the perfect fit:
“I always look at [Emiliano] Martinez,” Bent said, drawing comparisons to the Argentine’s rise after leaving Arsenal. “He was at Arsenal for like ten years and finally got an opportunity at the end, done incredibly well, won the FA Cup, was brilliant.
“[Bernd] Leno comes back [from injury], they sell him. Then obviously he [Martinez] leaves, the rest is history, wins the World Cup, is at a fantastic club in Aston Villa.”
Bent believes Kelleher could follow a similar path if he makes the move to Chelsea. “I think Kelleher is a very good goalkeeper. He’s 25, it’s time now, let’s get going now, do you know what I mean? I think there’s an opportunity there [at Chelsea].”
Bent also expressed concerns about Sanchez’s reliability: “I’m not convinced on [Robert] Sanchez if I’m honest, he makes some unbelievable saves… But I think him [Kelleher] going in there, [for] £35m, that’s not even a risk I don’t think.”
Kelleher’s stock has risen even further after helping Liverpool secure a clean sheet against Real Madrid on Wednesday night in a 2-0 win. His assured performances have shown he is ready for the next step, and a move to Chelsea could offer him the platform he craves.
As Chelsea fans, we know the importance of a commanding presence in goal. Kelleher has proven he has the talent and temperament to excel at the highest level, and Stamford Bridge could be the perfect place for him to make his mark. Could this be the signing Chelsea needs to solidify their goalkeeping position? Time will tell.
