Chelsea identify two centre-backs to sign ahead of January transfer window

Chelsea are actively scouting defensive reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window, with Benfica’s Tomas Araujo and Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi emerging as top targets, according to FootballTransfers. It’s clear that the Blues’ hierarchy is keen on bolstering the backline, and both young talents have caught their eye.

Araujo, the 22-year-old Benfica defender, was reportedly considered over the summer. However, Chelsea decided against a move as Benfica stood firm on his €100 million release clause. The Portuguese centre-back remains highly rated by Chelsea scouts, and with the January window approaching, there’s renewed interest in testing Benfica’s resolve.

Then there’s Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi, a name making waves in the Premier League. Zabarnyi, who joined the Cherries from Dynamo Kyiv for around €22.7m in January 2023, has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most promising young defenders. Known for his composure and maturity beyond his years, the Ukrainian international has earned widespread admiration, including from Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea fans should take note of Zabarnyi’s recent contract extension, a five-year deal tying him to Bournemouth until 2029. Upon signing it, he shared, “I’m so excited and so happy to be here. I’m really enjoying it, it’s a beautiful town and a really exciting project. I’ve enjoyed a lot of good moments, last season was important for me.” Despite his commitment to Bournemouth, Chelsea’s interest could spark serious negotiations as they aim to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Zabarnyi’s experience on the international stage, playing every minute for Ukraine at Euro 2024, and his impressive consistency in the Premier League – contributing to 12 clean sheets for Bournemouth last season – only add to his appeal. As Chelsea look to reinforce their defensive depth, fans will be eager to see if one of these two centre-backs dons blue in January.
