Why Enzo Fernandez Should Return to the Starting XI for Chelsea

With Chelsea facing some challenges in finding the right attacking balance, many fans are calling for Enzo Fernandez to make his way back into the starting lineup. Chelsea fan Vince voiced his concerns on Twitter, pointing out issues with the current setup and highlighting why Enzo’s presence could be the key to unlocking Chelsea’s full attacking potential.

“I don’t want to be a spoiler but I don’t really like our attacking balance at the moment,” Vince began, noting that while Chelsea’s current formation provides solid defensive stability, it lacks in the final third. The biggest issue, he points out, is that opponents are man-marking Cole Palmer in the middle and final third, forcing him to drop deeper and limiting his impact.

Vince argues that “what we need is more facilitators around him,” suggesting that when Palmer is forced deeper, the entire attacking threat drops off. Madueke, Pedro, and Gusto, he says, “don’t actually carry elite goal threat,” leaving gaps that opponents can exploit. “If Palmer drops too deep, Jackson has to come short to get involved,” he adds, which only disrupts the flow further.

He explains that Chelsea needs wingers who can “smell space behind the striker and make diagonal runs like Salah and Mane used to do.” Without players making these runs, Chelsea’s attack becomes stagnant, as strikers coming short, midfielders dropping back, and wingers staying wide don’t provide a dynamic, cohesive attacking unit.

“Enzo is the midfield facilitator,” Vince continued, making a strong case for Fernandez’s return. “He creates space for Palmer. He’s an expert in understanding where space is or dragging people out of position.” By reintroducing Enzo as an advanced midfielder, Vince believes Chelsea could create more attacking opportunities.

He outlined two possible solutions: bringing in a player like Nkunku or Felix as an advanced 8 to link the midfield and attack, or simply reinstating Enzo to play alongside Palmer, allowing him to operate as a creative outlet. “Enzo, Nkunku, or Felix receiving between the line can never be the same as Gusto,” Vince pointed out, emphasizing how a skilled midfielder in advanced areas would add more attacking solutions.

Vince concluded with a hopeful note for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca: “I hope Enzo Maresca has something for us after the break that will fix this.” As Chelsea fans, we couldn’t agree more—getting Enzo Fernandez back into the XI could provide the spark Chelsea’s attack needs, enhancing creativity and helping the Blues break down tough opposition.
