As Chelsea fans, we know how fierce competition can be within a squad packed with talent, but it’s clear Malo Gusto and Reece James are handling it like absolute professionals. Recently, Gusto opened up about his relationship with James and how both players are navigating their roles in the Chelsea lineup.
Gusto, who joined us last year for £30 million from Lyon, has been a revelation at right-back, and with Reece’s return after injury and suspension, both have showcased their ability to coexist on the pitch.
Reflecting on their dynamic, Gusto said, “I just try to give my best every day, the manager knows that. Reece and I have a great relationship between us. As you saw the last few games we played both, like him and me, it is not like only me or only him. There can be both.”
There’s no denying the strength in having both James and Gusto pushing each other. Gusto added, “We just try to push ourselves. That is what I try to do and we do our best and we try to help the team as much as we can. My job is just to do my best on the pitch. After, the people can say it is not my business. I just try to do my best and play with Reece or without Reece.”
It’s clear this squad depth, which some critics labelled excessive in the summer, is paying off for Chelsea. Gusto pointed out, “We have a lot of quality but it is good for the team. As you know we play Conference League in the week so it is good to change some times, to have two great teams. It is good for Chelsea to have this type of quality. We are happy to have this group.”
Currently, Chelsea sit comfortably in third place in the Premier League, and we’re dominating the Europa Conference League. This big squad, once questioned, is showing its value.
Gusto addressed this directly, saying, “The people don’t understand that. It is very important to have a lot of players with qualities. As I said we play Conference League as well and a few cups. It’s good to have a lot of players to make changes because otherwise we will die. It is good for the group and we just try to stay all together to create something between us as a group and to win everything.”
It’s a positive sign for our ambitions this season, and Gusto’s words give us a glimpse of the tight-knit team spirit driving this squad forward.
“We are in third place, so it’s good, we just have to keep it and create something between us as a group and to do our best on the pitch and to be where we have to be,” he shared.
With players like Gusto and James committed to pushing each other and the team to new heights, there’s every reason to believe Chelsea can continue this upward trajectory. The Blues are building something special, and we’re here to witness it.
