There was a controversial ruling made during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

An incident late in the game called the attention of VAR.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez put in a late tackle on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, but the referee only issued a yellow card.

Video Assistant Referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the challenge, but stuck with the referee’s decision, which has sparked outcry from Chelsea fans, with Blues boss Enzo Maresca claiming it was a red card offence.

The official Premier League Match Centre account on social media explained how the officials came to this decision.

The tweet read: “The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for a challenge on Palmer. VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming that it was a reckless challenge and not serious foul play.”

Former United captain Roy Keane, who was covering the game as a pundit for Sky Sports, however said, “Martinez is a lucky boy. It’s a nasty tackle.”
