Ben Chilwell could be set for a sensational return to Leicester City, as FootballTransfers reports that the Foxes are eyeing a January loan move for the Chelsea left-back. The former England international, who began his career at Leicester before joining Chelsea in 2020 for €50.2 million, has found himself on the periphery at Stamford Bridge since Enzo Maresca took charge this season.

Chilwell’s Chelsea journey has been a rollercoaster. After playing a crucial role in the club’s Champions League and UEFA Super Cup triumphs, he emerged as a key figure under Mauricio Pochettino, even serving as vice-captain last season. However, Maresca’s arrival saw the defender fall out of favour, with the Italian tactician opting to overlook him in the opening stages of the current campaign. Despite being omitted from matchday squads and rumoured interest from Manchester United over the summer, Chilwell remained at Chelsea and marked his return to action with a late substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup clash against Barrow.

Maresca acknowledged the situation, stating: “At the moment, he is with us, he is one of the Chelsea players, and one of our players. If we need to, we will give him chances and minutes.” Yet, the reality remains that Chilwell is currently Chelsea’s third-choice left-back, with Marc Cucurella and summer signing Renato Veiga ahead in the pecking order.

With Leicester’s return to the Premier League marred by defensive struggles—12 goals conceded already—the newly promoted side are keen to bring back a familiar face to shore up their backline. The Foxes see Chilwell as an ideal candidate to provide stability and experience, with manager Steve Cooper reportedly a big admirer of the 27-year-old.

Chilwell is said to be open to a move due to his limited playing time, and with his contract running until 2027, Chelsea could be willing to sanction a loan deal to manage their squad more effectively. Allowing him to leave could also free up funds for other potential signings in the January transfer window as Maresca continues to reshape his team.

While no agreement has been reached, the prospect of Chilwell donning Leicester blue once again is an intriguing one. It would mark a return to where his career began, and perhaps offer a much-needed fresh start after a challenging few months at Chelsea. The January window could well see the Foxes swoop in to bring home one of their own, as they seek to bolster their defence and climb up the Premier League table.
