Following Spain’s Euro 2024 victory over England in the European Championship final, Marc Cucurella was filmed singing out the lyrics of a song that had Erling Haaland in it.
“Cucu, Cucurella, he eats paella, Cucu, Cucurella he drinks Estrella, Haaland you’d better tremble as Cucurella is coming,” the Chelsea full-back sang to great cheers from his team-mates.
Erling Haaland seemed unimpressed when asked about Cucurella’s antics, following Man City’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge last month.
“‘It was an interesting song, that, from that guy [Cucurella],” Haaland told the BBC’s Match of the Day programme.
“There’s not that much to say. I don’t really think about that. He can do what he wants.
“Last year he asked me for my jersey, and then he starts singing about me.”
Cucurella however remains adamant he would sing it again, and doesn’t see anything wrong in the song.
“A lot of attention was given to that and these things happen,” Cucurella told EFE ahead of Spain’s Nations League opener with Serbia.
“I am very happy and I think that if someone has a song sung with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, the name of a player who is not known would not be used.
“Everyone is happy because he scored and I am still just as happy to win the Euros. I would do it again, these things happen and that is all.”
According to Cucurella, Cole Palmer spoke with Haaland about the song at an awards ceremony and there is no issue to speak of between himself and the Norwegian. He also added that the English media tried to create controversy with the incident.
“In the end, in England they took it a little out of context and I don’t think he understood it either,” he said.
“He read what they said and took it a little personally.
“Nowadays people take things very personally, but then they had some awards and my colleague Palmer asked him about me and that was it. It was just an anecdote.”
“They also asked him the question on purpose after winning the match to create controversy,” he continued.
“That’s all, it doesn’t affect me at all, everyone does their thing, he’s scoring goals and we’re winning the Euros.
“Everyone has their own life and I’m very happy that things are going well for him because he’s a great player and I’m doing my thing.”
