In a dramatic 1-1 draw against Chelsea, Will Hughes was at the centre of a controversial moment that left fans and pundits divided.
The Crystal Palace midfielder, already on a yellow card, fouled Chelsea’s Cole Palmer early in the second half to halt a promising attack.
Despite the apparent infringement, the referee chose not to issue a second yellow card, allowing Hughes to stay on the pitch as Chelsea led 1-0.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner weighed in on the incident during a post-match interview with Sky Sports.
Reflecting on his decision to keep Hughes on the field despite being cautioned earlier, Glasner admitted, “I don’t know if he was lucky, but it was a very big mistake from myself. My assistant said at half time to take him off, but I decided to keep him longer. I am really happy the referee didn’t destroy my Sunday.”
Glasner acknowledged that while Hughes was “a little bit late,” the foul was “not a terrible” one. He supported the referee’s decision, suggesting it was better for the game to remain 11 versus 11.
“I think it was a good decision for the game because otherwise, there would have been many yellow cards, and we want to see 11 v 11,” Glasner concluded.
The debate over whether Hughes should have seen red continues, with many questioning if the referee made the right call to avoid a potentially game-changing dismissal.
