Jadon Sancho has shared the reasons behind his unexpected switch from Manchester United to Chelsea at the very end of the summer transfer window, crediting the influence of manager Enzo Maresca as a key factor in his decision.

Sancho has joined Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy, bringing an end to his controversial three-year stint at Old Trafford.

While it appeared he would stay at United after making amends with manager Erik ten Hag during pre-season, his exclusion from the squad for their opening two Premier League games led to his departure.

In an interview with Chelsea’s club channels, Sancho revealed that Maresca, who previously worked with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, was pivotal in convincing him to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

“I think it’s the manager who really drew me to the project,” Sancho explained. “I knew him from his time with Pep Guardiola in Manchester City.

“He spoke to me on the phone about this project and what he was building here, and for a young player like myself it’s exciting and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sancho, known for his flair and creativity on the pitch, expressed his excitement about Maresca’s style of play. “They’re signing me for a reason and to contribute to the team, and I’m ready to do that,” he said.

“I enjoy his style of play. The wingers, when they get on the ball, he loves them to go one versus one and be direct. We play a lot of one-twos with the 10s and the striker combination plays. It’s very attractive and it’s a style that I play.”

Returning to London, where he grew up, is another significant factor for Sancho, who has been a long-time admirer of Chelsea. “I’m really excited to be here. London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back,” he shared.

“It’s been a bit crazy. Obviously, it was the last day of the transfer window so it’s expected to be a bit crazy, but I’m really happy it’s all finally done.”

Sancho also spoke about the pride he feels in joining a club he has admired since childhood. “Chelsea is iconic.

“My idols growing up were Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard, and now I have the opportunity to play for this club like them. It’s a great feeling,” he concluded.
