Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has made a bold statement regarding the futures of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, advising both players to find new clubs before the transfer window closes.
Maresca confirmed that Sterling and Chilwell are training away from the first team and are unlikely to feature regularly under his management.
Sterling, who was left out of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Manchester City, has sought ‘clarity’ on his role at the club.
In response, Maresca said, “They are training apart. As I said, the situation is quite clear, and there is not any update on the situation. They are Chelsea players. Until they are Chelsea players. But it’s possible to give them all minutes. Those who want minutes, they are better off to leave.”
The manager also spoke candidly about his conversation with Sterling before the Manchester City game: “I try to be honest. I spoke with Raheem before the Man City game. I said he’s going to struggle to get minutes with us, and this is the reason.”
Similarly, Ben Chilwell was also left out of the season opener, with Maresca admitting that the left-back should ‘probably’ leave if he wants more game time.
“With Chilly, he is a lovely guy, but he will struggle. If you define this as brutal, it’s up to you to decide. For me, it’s not brutal, it’s just honest,” Maresca explained.
Maresca justified his decision by stating that his preference for different types of players was the main reason for Sterling and Chilwell’s exclusion.
“I’m not saying Raheem is not a good player, but I prefer different kinds of wingers, and this is the reason why.”
The situation highlights the tough decisions being made at Stamford Bridge as Maresca seeks to rebuild the squad in his vision.
With the transfer window closing soon, both Sterling and Chilwell face crucial decisions about their futures as they look for clubs where they can secure regular playing time.
Maresca’s frank comments suggest that staying at Chelsea will likely mean limited opportunities for both players this season.
