Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has made a brutally honest assessment of Ben Chilwell’s future at Stamford Bridge, suggesting that the England international should seek a move away from the club to secure more playing time.

Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020, has struggled with injuries and has now fallen down the pecking order under Maresca’s management.

The 27-year-old left-back, who has only managed 70 Premier League appearances in four seasons with the Blues, is currently facing tough competition for his position.

Maresca, who recently took charge of Chelsea, admitted that while he appreciates Chilwell’s qualities, the player’s struggles to find a consistent role in the team have prompted him to recommend a departure.

“Chilly is with us but he has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill,” Maresca explained.

“The reason he did not play [in a pre-season friendly] versus Inter was because, with Chilly, it is quite clear, even though I love the way he is, the problem is, he is struggling a bit to find the right position.”

Maresca’s comments highlight the ongoing challenge of managing Chelsea’s bloated first-team squad, which currently includes 43 players.

The Italian coach acknowledged that the squad size is unmanageable and that some players will need to leave before the transfer window closes.

“At the moment, it is not difficult, but if I start to think I have 43 players, it’s not good,” Maresca admitted.

With the transfer window still open, Chilwell may have an opportunity to find a new club where he can secure regular playing time.

Maresca’s frank assessment suggests that a move could be in the best interest of both the player and the club as Chelsea continues to refine its squad ahead of the new season.
