Chelsea and Enzo Maresca were spared some blushes, as the Blues were close to losing yet another friendly fixture against Inter Milan just before the start of the season.

Chelsea had only recorded one pre-season victory this summer, with the remaining ending in a draw against Wrexham and defeats to Celtic, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

It was looking like a familiar story when Marcus Thuram dished out a thunderous first-half strike to put Inter Milan ahead.

Following a busting run out from defence by centre-back Yann Bisseck, it made Inter’s 26th-minute goal possible. As he approached the box, he tapped wide to Joaquin Correa, who quickly slipped Thuram through.

The Frenchman had a simpler job, slamming into the top corner with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez well beaten.

Chelsea started to assert some control after going behind, with Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto particularly lively, combining well down the right-hand side.

For all of Chelsea’s control, the Blues couldn’t fathom clearcut chances, other than two volleyed efforts by Chelsea’s teenage striker Marc Guiu — both of which were tipped clear by Yann Sommer.

Chelsea improved their tempo in the second-half, and further improved as the half progressed, with the introduction of Christopher Nkunku and Cole Palmer. Nkunku could have levelled the scores when his acrobatic bicycle kick was parried by Sommer.

When it looked like the match was getting to a finish, late substitute Ugochukwu volleyed through a crowd of bodies and into the net for an equaliser from Palmer’s free-kick, in almost the final kick of the game.

At the end, Chelsea managed to seal a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge.
