Chelsea have had a long-term interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, but no deal has been secured for the Nigerian international.

Napoli want to sell the striker, with Antonio Conte keen on landing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

On Saturday, Napoli took on Girona in a pre-season friendly with Osimhen left out of Conte’s squad entirely despite being captured in the club’s training camp.

There have been reports of a likely Osimhen transfer to Chelsea, but former Liverpool player Steve Nicol says the deal doesn’t make sense.

“I can’t get my head around this,” he told ESPN.

“Osimhen signs a new deal to be nice to the club and then he goes on loan to Chelsea? It doesn’t make sense from Osimhen’s point of view.

“I was shocked when I heard that this could be a loan, I guess it makes sense for both clubs if the money is right, but from his point of view I don’t think I would be particularly keen to go anywhere on loan.”
