In the wake of Argentina’s Copa America celebrations, former Chelsea striker Carlton Cole has called on Lionel Messi to address and condemn the actions of his teammates.

The incident, which followed Argentina’s extra-time victory over Colombia, has stirred significant controversy due to a racially charged chant that was live-streamed by Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The chant, which originated around Argentina’s 2022 World Cup win, includes derogatory references to French players, suggesting they are of Angolan, Nigerian, or Cameroonian descent.

Although Messi was not present during the celebrations as he remained in Miami, Cole insists that the Inter Miami star, as team captain, must speak out.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cole emphasized Messi’s responsibility as a leader: “Argentina have got someone who is renowned as probably the best footballer to ever grace the beautiful game – Lionel Messi.

“We’ve got to look at Messi and say, you know what, Messi come out. We need to hear you. You’ve got to speak up about this.”

Cole criticized Messi’s silence, suggesting it could be interpreted as indifference to the feelings of black players and fans: “Otherwise, it’s just like he doesn’t care.

“He doesn’t care how I feel, he doesn’t care how some of his black teammates he’s had in the past feel.

“That just shows me that he’s selfish. He needs to come out and say something. I condemn him.

“Simple. I condemn Messi.”

Chelsea is currently investigating the incident, with Fernandez at the center of the controversy.

The 23-year-old has since issued an apology on social media, explaining that he was “caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations.”
