Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen was devastated to have missed the final Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.
Maatsen was named in the Ronald Koeman’s preliminary 30-man squad but failed to make the final 26-man squad, when it was confirmed last week.
Despite an impressive loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, where he was a key player as they reached the final only to lose to Real Madrid, Maatsen didn’t make the initial squad.
However, Ian Maatsen will now play at Euro 2024 after receiving an emergency call-up to the Netherlands squad.
Ronald Koeman decided to re-call the left-back at the last minute following an injury crisis to his squad.
Teams are allowed to make changes to their squad up until the start of the tournament in the case of an injury and with UEFA’s approval.
On Monday night it was announced that Frenkie De Jong would miss the Euros with an ankle injury. Then on Tuesday, fellow midfielder Teun Koopmeiners also pulled out after injuring his groin in the warmup of Monday’s friendly win over Iceland.
Shortly after, the Netherlands put out the following statement: ‘Ian Maatsen will join Oranje’s training camp in Wolfsburg later today. See you soon, Ian!’
Maatsen, who was on holiday in Greece, himself posted on Instagram: ‘Hungry to hunt with the Lions’.
Ian Maatsen is yet to make a single appearance for the Netherlands, but his ability to play multiple positions has helped his cause.
