In an emotional farewell, Jurgen Klopp took a swipe at Chelsea’s management style as he bid adieu to Liverpool fans on Tuesday night.
The 56-year-old German manager, who has decided to leave Liverpool this summer, has been replaced by Arne Slot.
Klopp attended a Q&A event at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, where 10,000 Liveepool supporters gathered to see him off.
During the event, Klopp became visibly emotional as fans chanted his name, breaking down in tears while reflecting on his time at the club.
However, he did not hold back when it came to criticizing Chelsea’s ownership under Todd Boehly, particularly the club’s decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.
In a candid moment, Klopp expressed his relief at having worked with Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), rather than the “trigger-happy” leadership at Stamford Bridge.
“We should be really happy we have them (Fenway Sports Group) and not guys who bought London clubs,” Klopp said. “I wouldn’t have survived a year at Liverpool (with them).”
Klopp’s comments come in the wake of Chelsea’s controversial sacking of Pochettino, a decision that has left many in the football world puzzled given the team’s recent performance improvements.
“Finally they (Chelsea) play football which everyone thinks ‘Oh, they might be back’ and then they sack the manager anyway,” Klopp remarked, highlighting the perceived instability and impatience of Chelsea’s ownership.
Klopp praised FSG for their commitment and support during his tenure at Liverpool.
“The owners (at Liverpool) feel responsible for the club. Are they the best in the world? I don’t know, I can’t say. But they worked really hard. I felt supported,” he added, underscoring the stark contrast he sees between the two ownership styles.
