Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has explained his decision to leave Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen out of the Euro 2024 squad.
Koeman has said there’s fierce competition and depth in the team’s defensive options.
Despite Maatsen’s solid performances on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Koeman opted for players with more experience and who better fit his tactical plans.
Ian Maatsen has yet to earn a senior cap for the national team, which also influenced the decision.
Koeman has said that Ian Maatsen is disappointed with the decision not to represent Netherlands at the Euro 2024.
Explaining why the 22-year-old was left out, Koeman said: “We have multiple options on his spot that I prefer.
“Daley Blind had a fantastic season with Girona, Micky van de Ven plays left back at Tottenham, Nathan Ake…”
Revealing how the Chelsea youngster took the news, Koeman added: “I Facetimed Maatsen this morning.
“No [it wasn’t a difficult conversation]. This is my job, I know these moments are coming.
“I had to think about when to tell Ian Maatsen my decision because he still has to play a Champions League final.
“I thought this morning was the right moment to tell him because he would still have three days left to focus on the final. He is disappointed.”
