According to reports, Chelsea have made the decision to grant Enzo Fernandez permission to join Argentina’s squad for the Olympics in the summer.

Enzo Fernandez had missed Chelsea’s last six Premier League games of the season after undergoing surgery.

Fernandez is eligible to play at the Olympics, as he was under the age of 23 at the start of the season.

Enzo has also been included in his nation’s squad for the Copa America, as Lionel Scaloni named his provisional 29-man squad on Monday.

The Olympics follow straight after the Copa America. Although Enzo Fernandez made the Argentina provisional squad, he could be one of three players to drop out of the final squad if he does not prove his fitness over the coming weeks.

Argentina have two World Cup qualifiers early next month, against Ecuador and Guatemala, before kicking off their Copa America campaign against Canada on June 21.

Clubs are under no obligation to release players for the Olympics, but widespread reports in Argentina claim Chelsea have given Enzo Fernandez permission to take part.

It is a somewhat surprising decision, if Enzo plays in the Copa America and Olympics, with the Copa America final taking place on July 14 and Argentina’s first group game at the Olympics kicking off just 10 days later against Morocco.

Argentina are believed to be taking the Olympics very seriously, and if make it to the final, that match will be played on August 11 – exactly one week before the new Premier League season kicks off.
