Jamie Redknapp has called for the Premier League to rethink its rules after Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson was not awarded a penalty in their 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest.
During the match, former Chelsea player Ola Aina appeared to wrestle Jackson to the ground in the penalty area as a corner was being played, but referee Tony Harrington dismissed the penalty claims. The VAR official, Michael Salisbury, also found no grounds to overturn the decision.
Redknapp has expressed concern that defenders are frequently favored in such situations, which he believes disrupts the fairness of the game.
“I don’t know why he is getting involved with pushing and pulling him,” Redknapp said as he reviewed the incident between Aina and Jackson.
“Just leave him alone and try and defend. As soon as you grab and pull him to the floor like that, you are risking of giving away a penalty.
“The rules at the moment are almost in the favour of the defenders. I think something has to change about that next year. We see it too often with players pulling people and blocking people. I am not a massive fan of it.”
