Chelsea are poised to make a definitive decision about Mauricio Pochettino’s role as manager during a post-season evaluation.
After leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022, Pochettino resumed his coaching career last summer by signing a two-year contract with Chelsea, which includes an option for an additional year.
Despite leading Chelsea to the EFL Cup final—where the Blues lost to Liverpool—and the FA Cup semi-finals, where the Blues were narrowly defeated by Manchester City, Pochettino’s first season has been marked by challenges.
It’s Chelsea’s performance in the league that has raised concerns about Pochettino’s job security. This season, the team has won 15 games, drawn 9, and lost 11 out of 35 matches, showing a lack of consistent form.
The season has had its low points with significant losses to Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Arsenal, but also high points, such as recent victories against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. Chelsea beat Spurs 2-0 and followed up with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham.
Despite these recent successes, there remains uncertainty about whether Pochettino will continue as manager into the 2024-25 season.
According to a report from The Telegraph via SportsMole, Chelsea’s leadership plans to decide on Pochettino’s future in a meeting set for after the season ends. This review is scheduled to occur shortly after Chelsea’s last Premier League game against Bournemouth on May 19, allowing the club to quickly set their strategies for the next season.
Pochettino is expected to join the review alongside sporting director Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, and co-owners Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, and Jose E. Feliciano.
