A bizarre incident happened during the FA Cup quarter-final clash against Leicester City on Sunday.
With Chelsea leading 1-0, Raheem Sterling won a penalty for Chelsea, that should have further increased the lead.
Raheem Sterling took responsibility for the spot kick ahead of designated taker Cole Palmer, but ended up playing a poor kick.
Sterling’s penalty was easily saved by Leicester City goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk, and the 29 year old England forward was booed by Chelsea fans when he was substituted later in the game.
However, according to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Conor Gallagher, who was the captain that day, should have done something to prevent this.
The ex-Blue said: “Gallagher, as a captain, you should go to Sterling and say, ‘No. He’s the penalty taker. He’s taken five in a row; he’s scored all five. He needs to take it — it’s 1-0. Let’s secure this match first’. “
Back in October, a similar thing happened in the game against Arsenal.
Sterling again had tried to take the ball away from Palmer to play the penalty, but Enzo Fernandez stepped in and gave the ball back to Cole Palmer who scored the penalty.
