Frank Lampard has hailed Reece James as one of the best right-back in the world right now– when he’s fully fit.

Sadly, James has been mostly unavailable for Chelsea this season, as a result of persistent hamstring problems.

The 24-year-old is currently out with an injury which he picked up last December, although having missed every game the Blues have played in this year, he is expected back in action after the next international break.

Chelsea fans and Mauricio Pochettino will no doubt be thankful for one investment the club made last year though – as the acquisition of Malo Gusto from Lyon has proven to be an excellent decision by the recruitment team at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old has filled in for James very well,  since the Chelsea captain got injured, and many fans have made it clear they’re really happy with him.

Of course, Reece James remains a vital part of the Chelsea project, as Frank Lampard himself stated while speaking about the defender recently.

Speaking with JOE.co.uk, the former Chelsea manager said: “Mason Mount moves to Manchester United. As much as I have a real affiliation with Chelsea, I’m happy for him. I want him to go there and do well.

“Reece James is one of the best right-backs in the world in my opinion, absolutely in the world when he’s fit. Having a few issues, I’m happy to be there and ask ‘how are you feeling or what’s going on’ and be that person.”

James’ return could trigger a change in tactics for Pochettino, as the season enters its final stage.

With Ben Chilwell now out for the foreseeable future, and Gusto playing so well, our money is on the manager pushing the Frenchman to left-back to make room for his captain at right-back.

The change could be beneficial to Chelsea too, as it would leave the wide areas of the team protected by two of the best defenders in the game today.
