Cole Palmer may be a youngster, but he certainly is smarter than some people seem to think— people like ex-Tottenham and Aston Villa boss, Tim Sherwood.
In his usual style, Palmer put on an impressive showing, as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 3-2 in the Premier League on Monday Night.
The 21-year-old was subsequently named ‘Man of the Match’, and had to do some interviews after the game.
During one of those interviews, Sherwood tried to get Palmer to belittle his Chelsea teammates by telling him to his face that he is the best player at Chelsea, and the club needs to sign more players of his quality.
Sherwood told Palmer: “All you need is some players to play with. I know you can’t say that but I’m saying it. I just think you need more quality around you.
“For me, he [Pochettino] needs to build the team around you and the quality that you have. But that will come with a few transfer windows hopefully once he gets the right players in.”
Cole Palmer, who felt ambushed by Tim Sherwood was initially confused by the comment, but he ended up handling it well, replying the pundit: “There’s a lot of quality there, not just me. We’ve got loads of other players so hopefully the team can gel a bit more than everyone has seen.”
He also said: “I think there is so much talent at Chelsea.
“The fans don’t see it, you guys don’t see it, but the way the manager works us on the pitch, the things he does with us, it’s only going to get better.
“I am sure that if not next season, but the season after, it’s a project and everyone’s young and we will see it sooner or later.”
Sherwood has received a lot of bashing for his shameless comments, but Chelsea fans are happier with Palmer for not falling for the gimmick, and handling the situation very well, instead.
