Gary Neville has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino has been making an illogical demand from his current Chelsea team.
The Sky Sports pundit is of the opinion that Chelsea at the moment, do not have the right players to play out from the back, as Pochettino prefers them to do oftentimes.
Neville’s claim came during Chelsea’s 3-2 Premier League victory against Newcastle on Monday night.
Despite the win, it was actually visible to all that Chelsea struggled to play out from the back, and on one occasion earlier in the match, Djordje Petrovic gave the ball away in his own side of the pitch, after he came under so much pressure from the visitors.
Neville said: “You watch some teams do that goal kick where the centre-back passes to the goalkeeper and they’re full of confidence, but you’ve got a Chelsea back four which are changing at best, and you’re asking them to do something they’re not even capable of.”
The Manchester United great also said on another occasion in the first half: “This is actually my main worry for Chelsea. These six-yard goal kicks.”
We know that Chelsea have struggled to play out from the back a lot this season, but maybe it seemed worse on Monday night because a few of the players around Petrovic are still trying to gel back with the team after being out injured for many months – this includes Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella, who are now beginning to find their feet back into the team.
Despite the statement made by Gary Neville, Mauricio Pochettino must continue to train his players on how to pass out from the back, and build confidence while doing so.
