On Monday, Newcastle United will be visiting Stamford Bridge for the reverse fixture of their Premier League clash with Chelsea, and ahead of the game, Sky Sports pundit, and known fan of the Blues, Paul Merson has shared what he believes Mauricio Pochettino’s men need to correct in order to start winning matches more.
Chelsea’s last game ended 2-2 against Brentford at the GTech stadium last Saturday. In fact, the home side would have won it, if not for a very late Axel Disasi header.
Chelsea had taken the lead in the first half, when they played really well, but it was a different ball game in the second period, as Brentford bossed affairs, and created numerous chances, out of which they scored twice to go ahead.
Paul Merson has now told Chelsea that they need to arrest the disturbing trend of having contrasting displays in different phases of their games, as that is the only way they can really move forward this season.
The former Arsenal man also predicted the outcome of the league clash with the Magpies next week, backing Chelsea to win it 2-1.
Merson said: “Chelsea are four points behind Newcastle with a game in hand, so this is an absolutely massive game for them. If they can win this and go on a bit of a run, it may not be all doom and gloom for Mauricio Pochettino, whose position at the club is likely to be re-evaluated at the end of the season.
“The Blues are slowly getting better, but they tend to have phases in games. They need to be more consistent over the course of the 90 minutes to start winning more games. Chelsea have some nice games coming up and could end the season well, so I’m going for a 2-1 home win.”
Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle
