Kevin De Bruyne has admitted he might have been a little hasty in making the decision to leave Chelsea in the early years of his football career— and reveals he nearly played for Jurgen Klopp, before the move was blocked by former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho.
Kevin De Bruyne joined Chelsea from Belgian club, Genk in 2012, but couldn’t really make an impact in the first team, before he was loaned out.
After a loan spell at Werder Bremen, the 32-year-old was sold to fellow Bundesliga club, Wolfsburg, where he eventually moved to Manchester City from in 2015.
According to De Bruyne, before he left Chelsea permanently, he wanted to join Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund at the time, but Mourinho was insistent on keeping him.
The midfielder has since gone on to achieve so much success during his time with Manchester City, including winning the treble last season, but he insists he might have been a little impatient when he decided to leave Stamford Bridge.
He told TNT Sports: “I signed for Chelsea knowing I would be loaned out the first year, and if I do really well we’ll see what happens. Went to Werder Bremen, had a really good year. But then in the summer it was a bit of a toss-up. I could’ve gone to Dortmund with Klopp at the time or stay, and Jose wanted me to stay.
“It just didn’t work out, I was maybe a little bit impatient at the time also, but I just wanted to play football. I had the confidence – I know there’s a lot of good players there and I understand how it works for the young guys. I didn’t want that situation anymore, so I pushed a little bit to get sold.”
