Chelsea legend, Claude Makelele has revealed he played a role in one of the academy products at the club change his playing position.

Makelele had a job at Chelsea as a technical mentor— a role that saw him work with young players at Stamford Bridge before he left in 2023.

One player the Frenchman has now recalled having particular influence on his game is Trevoh Chalobah, who was once a midfielder before he turned into a centre back.

Speaking with The Athletic, Makelele said: “One example is Trevoh Chalobah, who was playing as a midfielder. I made him understand he was not a midfielder — you need to play behind [in defence], because that allows you to see the game. So we talked a lot.

“He tried one time and he said he was comfortable like this and he started making his way.”

Chalobah has grown to be a versatile player for Chelsea, even though injuries have impacted his season under Mauricio Pochettino negatively.

After a very lengthy spell on the sidelines this season, the 24-year-old finally started playing again last month, and has started two straight matches since then, including the 2-2 draw with Brentford last Saturday.
