Marc Cucurella could make a surprise return to the Spanish La Liga this summer after finding life difficult at Chelsea, according to a recent report by Fabrizio Romano.
Cucurella joined the Blues from Brighton while Thomas Tuchel was still in charge for a fee around £60m.
However, two seasons down the line, the 25-year-old has struggled to become a regular in the starting XI at Stamford Bridge, with Mauricio Pochettino seemingly preferring to play either Ben Chilwell or Levi Colwill at left-back.
And Romano is now reporting that Cucurella could well be on his way out of Stamford Bridge by the time the season ends, although that would depend on a number of factors.
The transfer expert wrote for CaughtOffside: “Marc Cucurella – the Chelsea left-back has been linked with a return to La Liga.
“My understanding is that he is one of the situations to be assessed at the end of the season. Cucurella, Chalobah and more…these players are waiting to see what Chelsea decide to do in terms of project, tactical plans for next season, the manager situation.”
Cucurella was linked with a loan move to Manchester United last summer, but a deal could not be reached, and Romano has now claimed that it was due to a disagreement over the length of the contract.
“Cucurella was available on loan in the final days of August last year but deal with Man United collapsed because Man Utd wanted to include a break clause for January and Chelsea rejected,” he said.
Cucurella is currently injured, and is expected back into the squad before the end of the season.
