Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has admitted his footballing career might have taken him to Stamford Bridge if things had happened differently during his playing days.
Rooney spent a good number of his years as a football player scoring goals and winning matches for Manchester United, who then, had Chelsea as their biggest rivals in English football.
Both clubs went toe to toe for the Premier League title and other trophies for many years, and for each time the Red Devils came out on top, they mostly had Rooney’s goals to thank for it.
The former Derby County boss left United in 2017, after becoming their highest ever goalscorer with 253 goals from 559 appearances, but according to him, some of that could have gone to another club, including Chelsea, who came asking for his services back in 2010.
He told ‘Stick to Football’: “2010. It wasn’t just City, there were a few teams asking. Barcelona, Real Madrid were asking. City were asking, Chelsea were asking. There’s a few teams. I genuinely wanted to stay at United but I think there was a clash with me and the manager.
“I knew once you disagree with him he doesn’t take it lightly. My relationship with the manager was never the same after that.”
Since quitting football as a player, Rooney has gone on to become a manager, but he hasn’t enjoyed as much success as he did while playing the game.
