Football pundit, Robbie Mustoe has admitted his surprise at how quickly Malo Gusto is adapting to the English game, following his summer move to Stamford Bridge.

Gusto actually sealed his £26m transfer from Lyon, last January, but part of the conditions for the deal was that the 20-year-old would be allowed to finish the 2022-23 campaign in France before making the switch to West London.

Since his arrival at Chelsea, the right-back has proven to be a great buy for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, throwing in some amazing performances for the team in the absence of their captain, Reece James.

After 24 matches, Gusto has picked up six assists for Chelsea this season, and was particularly praised for his contribution to the club’s recent 1-1 draw with Manchester City away at the Etihad stadium.

One man who has certainly been impressed with Gusto is Mustoe, who has now told NBC Sports just how surprised he is by the defender’s pace, before going on to add that the Chelsea star’s technical and defensive abilities are some of the things that make him special.

“Malo Gusto, the French full-back that’s in the team now as Reece James is out injured, is getting better and better every week I see him,” Mustoe said.

“First off is not questioned, his technical ability. Very skilful. Good decision maker.

“What has surprised me is his pace, his defensive one-on-one situations.

“… Malo Gusto is adjusting lovely. At his age, I think there’s a bright future for this guy.”
