Marcel Desailly has argued that the Chelsea board made a huge mistake in appointing Mauricio Pochettino as manager of the club because he doesn’t think that the Argentine is the perfect candidate for the role.

Desailly made the claim while speaking on beIN Sports, although he admitted that the Argentine does need more time to get it right.

According to Desailly, Pochettino shouldn’t be appointed to take charge of such a young squad.

The former Chelsea defender said: “When they were choosing [their manager] they were not yet sure about their strategy, bringing in young players or experienced players.

“They made a decision to bring a whole lot of young players that they had in the system and some other ones to build up. The casting was not perfect on Pochettino taking over the Chelsea team. It could have been another coach more experience on that grade of players. But he needs time.”

Chelsea are 10th on the league table after 24 games, and with 14 more games to go until the end of the season. The Blues are however, still in contention for both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and could still finish the season well if they manage to win the two.

Meanwhile, while we agree that Pochettino may not be the best manager in the world today, it would be unfair to claim that the 51-year-old isn’t right for the young team of players currently at Chelsea after seeing how he transformed Tottenham into a successful side after a few years.
