Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol has poured cold water on hopes of Chelsea fans potentially seeing a Barcelona midfielder join the Blues this summer.
Frenkie de Jong is reportedly up for sale at Barcelona at the end of the season, and Chelsea are said to be keen on placing a bid for the Dutchman, whose valuation is in the neighbourhood of £85m.
Nicol was asked if he thought the talented midfield star would somehow end up at Stamford Bridge this summer, but the pundit said it will not be happening, and that Manchester United are the likely club to get him if he does leave the Camp Nou.
He told ESPN FC: “No. No, no chance. Absolutely no chance, seems more like a Man United buy. Well, the manager’s Dutch for a start.”
Chelsea have invested an awful lot of money into buying quality midfielders in the last year or so, which makes it very unlikely that they’ll want spend so much on De Jong. It has absolutely nothing to do with their pull power as a club, because we have seen big names like Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia all turn down offers from other clubs just to play for Chelsea.
