Mauricio Pochettino reacts to potential introduction of ‘Blue’ card

Mauricio Pochettino has said that he doesn’t like the idea of floating an additional card type to the ones that are currently available in football, as it’s likely to make the game more complicated.

The Chelsea boss made the comment while reacting to a question regarding the potential introduction of a ‘Blue card’ by IFAB, as a way of helping referees manage matches better.

According to reports, players who get issued the card will be required to leave the pitch for 10 minutes before they’re allowed back in. It is also said that the card will be brandished when players make certain fouls or show dissent to the referee.

“It is difficult to express how I feel about the blue card,” Pochettino said of the development, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“It’s difficult to explain. At the moment, we don’t have too much information about that.

“I think that is going to create more debate. It is going to be more complicated for the referees, the players, the fans.

“At the moment, which is my feeling now is that it is not a good idea. But we will see what happens, with one opportunity to see how it works. After to have better opinions and how it works and how they are going to apply.

“But for me, my first feeling is that it is so complicated to add another colour, another card to the game because there is so many question marks.”

The Blue card is set to be trialed in the lower leagues, after which it will get to mainstream football if it’s successful.
