According to reports, a blue card is about to be introduced in football.
While we are used to the yellow card and red card, football is now set to see the blue card.
Players who receive this card will be temporarily removed from the field for 10 minutes for committing a ‘cynical’ foul or showing dissent towards a match official.
The blue card will somewhat serve as a punishment in-between a booking and a sending-off. It’ll be similar to sin-bins used in other sports, like rugby.
The blue card has been approved for trials by the International Football Association board, the game’s lawmakers.
The next season’s FA Cup, men’s and women’s, could see the introduction of a blue card as the FA are volunteering to provide the testing ground for the new rule.
Meanwhile, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has kicked against the idea, claiming “it’s not football any more”.
As it stands, it won’t be used in the European Championship 2024 or the Champions League next season.
