Chris Sutton has claimed that Todd Boehly will be thinking about Graham Potter right now, and the circumstances under which the Englishman left Chelsea last season, as calls continue to be made for Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked.
Potter was brought in to replace Thomas Tuchel last season, and it was expected he’d improve the team’s performance.
The former Brighton boss however, couldn’t last an entire season before he was shown the door after failing to propel Chelsea to the top side of the Premier League table.
The Blues went on to finish the 2022-23 campaign in 12th place, and there was fresh hope when Mauricio Pochettino was named their new manager at the start of the 2023-24 season, but the same problems have persisted under the Argentine, who has managed to win just nine games all season.
Chelsea were handed 4-1 and 4-2 losses against Liverpool and Wolves respectively, in their last two league outings, leading to increased calls for the 51-year-old to be sacked from the club.
However, there has been little to suggest that Boehly will do that at the moment, with some reports claiming that Chelsea’s current standing with FFP is exactly the reason that is the case.
Sutton also believes that the American will now be looking back on what happened with Potter last season, as he looks to hire a new manager to replace Pochettino.
He told It’s All Kicking Off!: “I suppose we are at the stage now, where the comparison [is there] with Graham Potter and Graham Potter got the sack.
“That must be crossing Todd Boehly’s mind and the criticism at Chelsea is across all areas. It’s how can things change and what can the catalyst be for change? Is it the manager? Is it he players?
“The manager is not going to sack himself, so it’s whether they are prepared to stick with Pochettino and whether he’s getting a good enough tune out of the players.”
