Mauricio Pochettino was wowed by Cole Palmer’s display as Chelsea beat Middlesbrough in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg meeting on Tuesday night.

After going down 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Riverside stadium two weeks ago, the Blues turned on the style, and put on a fantastic performance in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer was impressive in the first leg, but his contribution was overshadowed by his inability to convert the open opportunities that came his way, but on Tuesday night, he scored twice, as Chelsea fired six past Boro in a 6-2 aggregate victory.

After the game, Pochettino spoke about a number of subjects, and reserved special praise for Palmer, who he described as an ‘amazing talent’.

“He is a player with an amazing talent. It is a player that understands the game. He has the quality and the talent to see the situation and to read the game in another aspect,” the Chelsea boss told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel.

“He can play from the right, striker or in behind the striker. We try to give him freedom because in this type of game he can find the best position to help the team.

“For me, [the best part] is when he presses and then the intuition to get the ball back. He is still young but he is doing fantastic for us.”
