Ian Maatsen is currently plying his trade with Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

The Dutchman sealed a loan move with BVB last week, which will see him spend the rest of the 2023-24 season with them. The move became necessary after it was clear that Maatsen wasn’t going to get his wish of playing regularly under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, before the deal was completed, Chelsea got the 22-year-old to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge.

The new deal means the full-back is now contracted with the Blues until 2026, which puts Chelsea at a vantage point when it’s time to sell him.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are still open to selling Maatsen, and his new deal may have made that easier with the insertion of a £35m release clause.

Maatsen was involved as Dortmund beat FC Darmstadt 3-0 over the weekend, and he might well remain there if he does very well before the end of his loan contract.
